Biography

R. H. Helmholz is the Ruth Wyatt Rosenson Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago Law School. He has been a faculty member since 1981, following a decade of teaching at Washington University in St. Louis. Helmholz holds an AB in French literature from Princeton University and a PhD in medieval history from the University of California at Berkeley. His distinguished career is highlighted by prestigious awards such as the Fulbright Scholarship, Guggenheim Fellowship, and the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize. In the academic year 2000-2001, he served as the Arthur Goodhart Professor of Law at Cambridge University while being elected a fellow of Gonville Caius College. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Medieval Academy of America, as well as a member of the American Law Institute. His teaching and research interests lie in legal history, particularly the relevance of Roman canon law in the development of common law. Helmholz has held various positions of leadership in academic and professional organizations, and he continues to contribute to scholarship in legal history through editorial roles and public engagements.
