Biography

Ruth Lehmann is a prominent professor in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and serves as the Director of the Whitehead Institute. Her research focuses on the biological origins of germ cells and their ability to transmit genetic potential to offspring, thereby enabling the generation of completely new organisms. She investigates both the nuclear genome and the cytoplasmic information that is inherited through the egg cell. Her work also includes the analysis of the organization and regulation of germline-specific RNA-protein condensates and explores the mechanisms that enable endosymbionts, such as mitochondria and the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia, to propagate through the female germ line. Lehmann has received numerous accolades for her contributions to the field, including the Vanderbilt Prize in Biomedical Science and the Gruber Genetics Prize in 2022, as well as the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal from the Genetics Society of America in 2021.
