Biography

Ruth Mackenzie graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2002 with an M.Sci. (Hons) in Genetics. After a brief period in the financial sector and some traveling, she returned to complete her British Heart Foundation (BHF) funded PhD titled 'Oxidative Stress in Endothelial Cells of Patients with Coronary Artery Disease' in 2009 under the supervision of Dr. William Miller and Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak. After her PhD, Ruth continued her research on the role of AMP-activated protein kinase and oxidative stress in endothelial dysfunction. She contributed to investigations of gene expression profiles in the endothelium of women suffering from pre-eclampsia and joined Professor Andrew Baker’s group in 2011 to study the directed differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into endothelial cells. Additionally, she worked on microRNAs and long noncoding RNAs related to vascular smooth muscle cell biology and pathology. Returning to Professor Delles’ group in 2014, Ruth was involved in the EU-funded SysVASC project, employing a systems medicine approach to understand cardiovascular disease and identify diagnostic biomarkers. In 2017, she transitioned from laboratory work to project management, collaborating with Professor Jennifer Logue on the development of long-term outcomes in bariatric surgery and currently managing the Heart Failure Clinical Trials Team.
