Biography

Ruth Phillips received her doctorate in African art history from the School of Oriental and African Art at the University of London in 1979. Her dissertation focused on the masquerades performed by Mende women in Sierra Leone. Following her doctoral studies, she served as a post-doctoral fellow, which allowed her to extend her research into the indigenous arts of North America. Phillips has worked on various curatorial projects, including 'Patterns of Power: Jasper Grant Collection of Great Lakes Indian Art of the Early Nineteenth Century' in 1984, and the Northeast component of 'Spirit Sings: Artistic Traditions of Canada’s Peoples' in 1988. Her work in these areas has stimulated a further expansion of research, particularly in which modalities resonate with museum representation of non-Western arts.
