Biography

Ruth Thornton is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia and co-lead of the Bacterial Respiratory Infectious Disease Group at the Telethon Kids Institute. Her research focuses on understanding the interactions between bacteria and the host that lead to chronic recurrent respiratory infections, particularly in the ear, nose, and throat regions. Her significant contributions include groundbreaking insights into bacterial biofilms and intracellular persistence, which have altered the paradigms for understanding and treating otitis media. Walton's work has demonstrated the existence of pathogenic bacterial biofilms within the middle ear mucosa in children suffering from chronic recurrent otitis media. Additionally, she has shown that the middle ear fluid contains host DNA that bacteria exploit for persistence, leading to recurrent infections and repeated surgical interventions. As the lead investigator of the ATOMIC ears clinical trial at Perth Children’s Hospital, she is examining the safety and effectiveness of anti-biofilm agents in treating these recurrent conditions. Her research aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to improve health and well-being through innovative approaches to infectious diseases.
