Biography

Ryan Barnett is an Associate Professor in Condensed Matter Theory in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London. He obtained his PhD in Physics from Harvard University and has held postdoctoral positions at Caltech and the Joint Quantum Institute at the University of Maryland/NIST. Ryan chairs the Institute of Physics (IOP) special interest group on Theory and Condensed Matter (TCM), promoting the field and serving the TCM research community in the UK. He has held leadership roles at Imperial College, including Director of the Applied Mathematics MSc from 2014 to 2019 and Director of Postgraduate Studies in Mathematics from 2019 to 2024. Ryan teaches various modules in the mathematics department, focusing on physics and applied mathematics themes, and is currently teaching Quantum Mechanics 2, a course he introduced in 2018. He has supervised numerous undergraduate and MSc project students and conducts impactful research across a range of topics in quantum physics, with current interests focusing primarily on the dynamics of ultracold atomic gases and topological condensed matter systems.
