Dr. Ryan Centner

Biography

Ryan Centner is an Associate Professor specializing in Urban Geography at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His diverse research focuses on urban transformation and the interplay between social, spatial, and economic changes in cities. He studies how the built environment affects people's experiences and contributes to inequality and place distinctiveness. As a multilingual researcher, Ryan employs Spanish, Portuguese, and French in his work, which spans various global contexts, including Latin America and the Middle East. He earned his PhD in Sociology with an emphasis on Global Metropolitan Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. His teaching experiences include positions at Tufts University, where he covered International Relations and Urban Planning. Ryan's current projects involve editing the Oxford Handbook of Urban Sociology and collaborating on various comparative ethnographies. He also leads field courses at LSE, placing a strong emphasis on experiential learning and fieldwork methods.
