Biography

Ryan Dunch is a Professor in the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta. He earned his BA (Hons) in Asian Studies from the Australian National University in 1987, an MA in History from the University of British Columbia in 1991, and his Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 1996. His primary research area is modern Chinese history, focusing on Chinese Christianity and its intersection with nationalism and print culture. Dunch authored 'Fuzhou Protestants Making Modern China, 1857-1927', published by Yale University Press in 2001, and has co-edited 'Taiwan Dynamic Transition: Nation Building Democratization' with Ashley Esarey. His current research examines missionary publishing in China during the early 20th century, specifically between 1800 and 1911. He has taught various courses on East Asian history and is currently accepting undergraduate students for research project supervision. Dunch’s publications include numerous articles and chapters on topics related to Chinese Christianity and modern world history, reflecting his expertise in the field and commitment to advancing historical scholarship.
