Biography

Ryan Fraser completed his Ph.D. in 2007 under the supervision of Dr. Walter Moser at the University of Montreal. He holds degrees from the University of Manitoba, including an M.A. in French (1999) and a B.A. in French (1994). He began his academic career at the University of Ottawa in the School of Translation and Interpretation, Faculty of Arts, in 2007 and achieved tenure as an Associate Professor in 2013. His research focuses on Translation Theories, leveraging both European and American frameworks, with an emphasis on text semiotics, literature, and poetics. Fraser's work has evolved from examining translation as a reflection of interpersonal and intercultural tensions to exploring cognitive processes involved in text construction. His mission centers on enhancing students' skills as readers, writers, and editors of English-language texts. He has also revisited grammatical and rhetorical principles in professional writing, an area he believes is under-studied in Canada. His significant contributions to the literary field have involved analyzing translation through the cognitive lens of poetics and narratology, with notable publications emerging from this research strand in 2020.
