Ryan Isakson is an economic geographer with broad interests in food systems and agrarian development, particularly in Latin American contexts. His research is driven by a desire to understand the relationships between socio-economic change and land use practices, with the overarching objective of informing and fostering development of socially and environmentally sustainable agri-food systems. To date, his work has focused on overlapping themes including the interplay of market development and peasant livelihoods, particularly in the cultivation of agricultural biodiversity in Guatemala; contemporary processes of 'financialization' that shape food economies; and the interactions between financial inclusion, commercialization of peasant agriculture, and the economic and environmental vulnerabilities facing Central American farmers, especially in the context of climate change.
