Biography

Ryan Turner is the Director of Vocal Ensembles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he conducts the M.I.T. Concert Choir and Chamber Chorus. Known for his masterful interpretations of works by Bach, Stravinsky, and Mendelssohn, Turner has been praised as an 'effervescent' conductor and a 'thinking man’s conductor'. He has served for fourteen seasons as the Artistic Director of Emmanuel Music in Boston, where he has established himself as an innovative programmer. Turner has conducted the entire cycle of Bach's sacred cantatas and major works including the St. John Passion and Mass in B minor. He has also championed new music by composers such as John Harbison and Matthew Aucoin, and has led acclaimed performances with the Boston Lyric Opera. A tenor soloist as well, Turner has appeared in various oratorio, recital, and opera performances, including his Carnegie Hall debut in Handel's Messiah. He holds degrees from Southern Methodist University and the Boston Conservatory, and currently resides north of Boston with his wife and children.
