Biography

Ryen White is an Affiliate Full Professor at the University of Washington and a Partner Research Area Manager at Microsoft Research, where he leads the Language Intelligent Assistance research area. He served as chief scientist for the Cortana applied science organization and was editor-in-chief of ACM Transactions on the Web. Ryen's contributions to the field of information retrieval have been widely recognized; his book, 'Interactions with Search Systems,' won the 2017 ASIST Information Science Book Award. Notably, he has been involved in organizing prestigious conferences, including serving as technical program co-chair for the 28th Web Conference in 2019 and as program co-chair for SIGIR 2017, a leading conference in search and information retrieval. He received several awards for his research papers, including the SIGIR Paper Award in 2013, 2010, and 2007. Ryen was honored with the British Computer Society's Distinguished Dissertation Award for his PhD dissertation in Computer Science, completed in the United Kingdom in 2005. He is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society.
