Biography

Rylan Simpson, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. He received his Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of California, Irvine. As a court-recognized expert in policing, Simpson conducts research related to public perceptions of police organizations and their effectiveness. He employs a variety of methodologies, including advanced experimental quantitative analyses. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his scholarship in policing and engagement with policing officials. In addition, Simpson chairs the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Experimental Criminology, is a Fellow of the Academy of Experimental Criminology, and serves on the Research Advisory Committees of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police. His research interests are motivated by extensive frontline experiences, including over 1,700 hours of ride-alongs with police agencies worldwide, including in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
