Dr. S Blackshaw

Biography

Dr. S. Blackshaw is an Emeritus Professor in the College of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. He joined the Department of Psychiatry in 1985 and retired in 2014, contributing significantly to the administration of the Department during his tenure. Dr. Blackshaw served as the Acting Department Head from July 2004 to October 2004 and had a notable role as the Director of the Psychiatry Residency Program from 1991 to 2001. He chaired the Psychotherapy Training Committee, developing a curriculum in accordance with the Royal College's requirements and led various educational programs within Family Medicine and Psychiatry. His clinical contributions included work at the Student Health Centre, where he developed the Eating Disorders Treatment Team and served as Acting Director from 2001 to 2002. Renowned as a clinician and teacher, Dr. Blackshaw's primary academic interests encompass Women’s and Gender Issues in Mental Health, Psychotherapy, and Professional Boundaries. He has published 17 papers and delivered numerous lectures and workshops at conferences. Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Blackshaw has served as an examiner for the Royal College for 11 years and was a founding member of the Royal College Specialty Committee in Psychiatry. He has remained active in committee work even after retirement and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Saskatchewan Psychiatric Association in 2015 for his contributions to the field of education in psychiatry.
