Biography

Sabine Gilch is a Professor at the University of Calgary, specializing in the field of Veterinary Medicine. She is a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the Calvin, Phoebe Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases. Her research primarily focuses on prion diseases, which are fatal neurodegenerative disorders affecting both humans and animals. These diseases stem from misfolded proteins that induce harmful conformational changes in host proteins, leading to severe neurological consequences. Dr. Gilch's work aims to understand the mechanisms of prion infections and their effects on cholesterol metabolism within neurons, as well as to explore their zoonotic potential. She oversees several research projects with funding from significant grants, including the Canadian Institutes Health Research and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. In addition to her research, she teaches various courses at the University of Calgary, including Molecular Biology and Virology, shaping the next generation of scientists in the field.
