Biography

Sabine Mai is a professor in the Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology at the University of Manitoba's Max Rady College of Medicine. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Genomic Instability and Nuclear Architecture in Cancer. With a distinguished career in cancer research, Mai has pioneered imaging technologies to study the spatial organization of the genome and its role in cancer progression. Her significant contributions have led to major discoveries in genomic instability, particularly through her work with the oncogene c-MYC, which is recognized as a potent inducer of structural changes in the cancer genome. Mai's research methods leverage advanced imaging techniques to investigate telomere organization and nuclear architecture, resulting in findings that have developed into structural biomarkers for multiple types of cancer including prostate cancer, multiple myeloma, and glioblastoma. She is the founder and director of the Genomic Centre for Cancer Research and Diagnosis, where she leads a multidisciplinary team focused on super-resolution microscopy to analyze nuclear structures in cancer cells. Throughout her career, she has secured over $33 million in research funding and has mentored more than 1,500 trainees globally. Mai has received numerous accolades, including the Women’s Executive Network Top 100: Canada's Powerful Women Award and was awarded the Cognition Challenge Award in 2013. She continues to advance the fields of molecular imaging and genomic research, training the next generation of scientists in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
