Biography

Sabrina Charles is a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer at Harvard Law School. A doctoral candidate in Sociology at New York University, her primary research interests include sociology of punishment, the administrative state, social theory, and sociology of legal knowledge. Her dissertation revolves around immigration court research, which is supported by a National Institute of Social Sciences Dissertation Grant aimed at conducting in-depth interviews with individuals who have undergone immigration court proceedings. Sabrina's research also delves into the dynamics of state social control and the role of incarcerated legal experts, often referred to as 'jailhouse lawyers', in facilitating access to legal expertise. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, where she served as the Executive Editor of the Yale Journal of Health Policy, Law, and Ethics, as well as an editor for the Yale Law Journal and the Yale Journal on Regulation. Sabrina also holds a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and an MPhil in Sociology from New York University. Her undergraduate studies were completed at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors. Additionally, she has clerked for the Honorable Barrington D. Parker at the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and has practiced law at prestigious firms including Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Ropes & Gray LLP, focusing on pro bono representation for clients in removal proceedings. Outside of her academic life, Sabrina enjoys playing the piano and backcountry backpacking, as well as traveling.
