Biography

Sachiko Kusukawa is an Honorary Professor in History of Science at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow in History and Philosophy of Science at Trinity College. Her research specializes in the history of science, with a focus on cultural and intellectual history, as well as the history of books. She has published extensively on topics such as Protestant natural philosophy and has conducted significant research on visual arguments in illustrated scientific books. In particular, her recent work has concentrated on observational and descriptive pictorial practices and their role in the development of scientific knowledge during the early modern period (1500-1720). Kusukawa's notable contributions include her monograph, "Picturing Nature," released by the University of Chicago Press in 2012, and her upcoming book on Renaissance physician Andreas Vesalius. She has been involved in various research projects, including the AHRC-funded project on diagrams in early modern astronomy and serves as Principal Investigator for a project on pictorial practices at the early Royal Society. Additionally, she supervises undergraduate topics on early modern science and medicine, and teaches history of science in the Natural Sciences Tripos at the university.
