Biography

Safoi Babana-Hampton is a Professor of French Francophone Studies in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. Her primary areas of teaching and research include 20th and 21st century French Francophone literatures, film, and cultural studies. She critically examines the role of culture in the construction of civic consciousness and the formation of modern public space in Morocco in her book, 'Réflexions littéraires sur l’espace public marocain dans l’oeuvre d’Abdellatif Laâbi' (Summa Publications, 2008). Additionally, she has authored articles covering a wide range of topics including multicultural citizenship, postcolonial conditions, and expressions of identity among French cultural minorities. She has been recognized as a Fulbright fellow and is a two-time recipient of the Senior Principal Investigator UIUC Humanities Walls award, which was funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation for her work on transnational collaborative documentary features such as 'Hmong Memory Crossroads' (2015) and 'Growing Hmong Crossroads' (2017). Babana-Hampton’s research interests focus on Francophone postcolonial studies, transnational diasporic studies in the French-speaking world, film studies, and the theories of narrative and representation, particularly in relation to gender, class, race, and cultural historical memory.
