Safyer McKenzie-Sampson is an IDEAL Provostial Fellow instructor in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. As a social perinatal epidemiologist, she focuses on researching the multi-level impacts of exposure to racism throughout the life course and its effects on adverse perinatal outcomes within Black communities. Her research aims to translate findings into interventions that promote birth justice. Her portfolio uniquely interrogates the rates of adverse perinatal outcomes through the lens of maternal nativity in the United States, allowing for a focus on the experiences of Black immigrants. Currently, she is the principal investigator for the AZANIA study, a mixed-methods pilot study that collects data on the pregnancy and childbirth experiences of African immigrants in California. In addition to her research, she actively supports families in the Bay Area as a full-spectrum community doula.
