Biography

Sai San Moon Lu is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University. His research centers on large-scale epidemiological studies aimed at identifying environmental risk factors for mental illness. He is currently investigating the impact of environmental exposures, particularly air pollution, on depression risk using data from a Swedish population-based cohort and national register data. His PhD research, which he is expected to complete in 2024 at Umeå University, examined the relationship between antibiotic use and cancer outcomes, especially focusing on colorectal cancer incidence, peri-operative complications, and survival rates. Sai also completed a master’s thesis at Umeå University in 2018 that explored inequalities in early childhood mortality in Myanmar through nationwide demographic survey data. Prior to his academic journey in Sweden, he completed medical studies in Myanmar in 2011 and spent seven years working in the public health sector in remote areas of the country. In 2017, he was awarded a Swedish Institute Study Scholarship to pursue a master's degree in public health in Sweden.
