Biography

Saida Grundy is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Boston University, specializing in African American and Black Diaspora Studies, as well as Women’s Gender Studies. A feminist sociologist, her research primarily focuses on the intersection of race, gender, and identity, particularly within the context of the Black middle class and the experiences of young Black men. Her current work utilizes in-depth interviews to explore the racialization processes affecting graduates of Morehouse College, a historically Black institution. Grundy critically engages with contemporary discourse surrounding young Black men, often perceived as being 'in crisis,' by examining the social constructions of manhood within these educational institutions. Her recent publication, 'Respectable: Politics Paradox Making Morehouse Man' (University of California Press, 2022), further extends this analysis. Additionally, her research spans themes such as masculinity, social justice capitalism, and racialized rape culture, contributing to a broader understanding of hegemonic masculinity and its implications for campus sexual assaults. Grundy’s work has been supported by esteemed organizations including the Boston University Center for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
