Biography

Saifee Rashiq is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, specializing in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He was born in the UK and completed his medical degree at the University of Nottingham. Before moving to Canada in 1992, he served as a House Officer with experience in Medicine, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, and Anesthesia, also participating in a medical officer role during a mountaineering expedition in southern Chile. Dr. Rashiq completed his Anesthesia training at the University of Alberta in 1995 and became a Fellow in Pain Medicine at the University of Washington’s Multidisciplinary Pain Centre in Seattle in 1997/98. He earned a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2002. Currently, he is a Staff Anesthesiologist in Adult General Neuroanesthesia and a Staff Physician in the Multidisciplinary Pain Clinic at the University of Alberta Hospitals. He coordinates the Anesthesiology Department's Resident Mentorship Program and is involved in the Academic Mentorship Program for undergraduate medical students. Dr. Rashiq has conducted multiple short-term clinical service teaching missions in Ecuador and Guyana. His research interests include Global Health, mentorship, and managing chronic non-cancer pain, particularly concerning complex psychosocial and functional chronic pain syndromes. He has provided expert opinions in legal cases involving Pain Medicine and Anesthesia, establishing himself as a recognized expert in Pain Medicine in Alberta's Court of Queen's Bench between 2008 and 2018.
