Dr. Sako Musterd

Biography

Sako Musterd is an Emeritus Professor of Urban Geography at the University of Amsterdam. He holds a PhD in Urban and Rural Geography from Free University Amsterdam, where he also completed his MA and BA. His research interests focus on inequality, social mobility, socio-spatial segregation, and neighborhood effects, particularly in large metropolitan areas. Over his career, he has authored or co-authored around 520 scientific publications and edited or contributed to 29 books. He has supervised 25 PhD students, aiding in their academic development. Musterd is notable for his leadership in major international research projects, securing significant funding while leading the Urban Geographies group at the University of Amsterdam. He has demonstrated an impressive h-index and citation rate, affirming his influence in the field. Additionally, he has held various prominent management positions within the academic community and has been actively involved in numerous advisory roles both nationally and internationally. His experience also extends to teaching across Bachelor, Masters, and PhD programs in Human Geography and Urban Studies, contributing significantly to the academic discourse on urban issues. Musterd continues to be an active figure in the advancement of urban research and education.
