Dr. Sako Musterd

Biography

Sako Musterd is an Emeritus Professor of Urban Geography at the University of Amsterdam, where he has held multiple positions including Full Professor and Associate Professor. His academic focus includes inequality, social mobility, socio-spatial segregation, and neighborhood effects, particularly in large metropolitan areas. He has extensive experience in leading national and international research projects and has been awarded over 10 million Euros in funding for various initiatives, including those under the European Union’s Framework Programmes. Musterd has authored and co-authored over 520 scientific publications and has edited 29 books, contributing significantly to urban studies literature. He actively supervises PhD students and serves on editorial boards of several leading journals in his field. With a notable h-index of 67, he is recognized as the 5th most cited author worldwide in Urban Geography. Musterd teaches courses in Human Geography, especially in Urban Geography and Urban Studies, demonstrating a commitment to educating future generations in his field.
