Biography

Salah Hassan is a Professor in the Department of English and a core faculty member of the Muslim Studies Program at Michigan State University. His research and teaching encompass postcolonial literature theory, mid-20th century anticolonial intellectual movements, and the literatures of empire, with a particular focus on Arab and Muslim North American studies. His current research projects investigate the representation of Arabs and Muslims in media and advocate for Arab Muslim self-representation. In 2011, he founded the Muslim Subjects website and has coordinated various projects, including 'Migrations of Islam' and 'American Halal'. Additionally, he co-curated the international online art exhibit 'RASHID & ROSETTA' and co-edited a special issue of MELUS focusing on Arab American literature. His contributions to academia include co-producing a short documentary film titled 'Death Imam' and producing a series of documentary films about Muslims in media. Hassan was appointed Director of the Global Studies in Arts and Humanities program effective August 16, 2020, and has served in various academic leadership roles at MSU.
