Biography

Saliha Belmessous is a Global Professor at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Corpus Christi. Her research focuses on global history, with an emphasis on the historical dynamics of political and legal issues surrounding colonisation and the imperial experiences of colonised peoples. She investigates the complexities of cross-cultural encounters and their impact on contemporary legal frameworks. Belmessous is currently leading a British Academy-funded project titled 'Legal Encounters: Origins of International Law', which aims to shift the focus away from traditional European theorists to the legal negotiations conducted between non-Europeans and Europeans in the Americas, Africa, and the Pacific from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. By exploring the legal interactions between European and non-European societies, she seeks to highlight the flexibility and inclusiveness of legal worlds that were often overlooked by past scholars. In her teaching, she actively engages with potential DPhil and Master's students who are interested in topics related to Global Imperial History.
