Dr. Salikoko Mufwene

Biography

Salikoko S. Mufwene is a distinguished professor specializing in Linguistics at the University of Chicago, having served since 1992. His research interests include Evolutionary Linguistics, focusing on the emergence of Creoles, Indigenization of European Colonial Languages, and Language Vitality in Africa and the Caribbean. Holding a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1979), he has contributed significantly to the field by publishing extensively in African creole linguistics and serving as founding editor for Cambridge Approaches to Language Contact. His academic endeavors also led him to lecture at prestigious institutions like Collège de France and Harvard University. Mufwene has been recognized as a Fellow of the Linguistic Society of America and has participated in various summer institutes, reflecting his impact on the linguistic community. In addition, he has chaired the Department of Linguistics and served as the Director of the University of Chicago Center in Paris.
