Dr. Sally Collins

Biography

Sally graduated in Medicine from the University of Oxford and specialized in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She has trained in the Oxford region and completed a PhD in Obstetric Ultrasound, starting her journey in AI medical imaging. She is highly research active and has authored around 150 journal articles, filed patents, and won international research awards. Currently, she leads the placenta accreta service at Birmingham Women's Hospital. Her research involves using machine learning techniques; her team has pioneered a fully automated method to estimate placental morphology and vascularity using 3D-PD ultrasound imaging, known as the OxNNet Toolkit. She is the Principal Investigator for various National Institute for Health Research AI Health Care grants and intends to test the clinical utility of the OxNNet Toolkit for predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes during early trimester ultrasound scans. The study examines the potential for an embedded standard NHS ultrasound department to provide a comprehensive healthcare economic analysis. Sally is active in developing national networks for improved management of placenta accreta spectrum. She represents the UK as Chair of the International Society for Placenta Accreta Spectrum and is regarded among the top experts globally for her work in this field.
