Biography

Salvatore Vitale joined the MIT Physics Department as an Assistant Professor in January 2017. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from the University of Bologna and completed his PhD in physics at Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris in 2010. Before joining the faculty, he was a postdoctoral associate at Nikhef in Amsterdam and a research scientist at the MIT LIGO Lab. His research focuses on data analysis of gravitational waves signals detected by LIGO instruments. Vitale is interested in the characterization of compact objects, formation channels, and the potential for using gravitational waves to perform strong-field tests of general relativity. He has developed low-latency search algorithms for unmodeled signals and has been deeply involved in the analysis of signals from binary black holes and neutron stars, contributing to groundbreaking discoveries in astrophysics that shed light on the properties of extreme objects.
