Biography

Sam Chamberlain is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Southampton, with expertise in impulsive and compulsive disorders. His research spans various clinical conditions, including gambling disorder, trichotillomania, skin picking disorder, compulsive stealing, and compulsive sexual behavior disorder, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Chamberlain's work is translational, employing diverse scientific methodologies to understand the causes of these disorders and develop effective treatments. He is the Service Director of the NHS Southern Gambling Service and leads the MINDS-IC research group, which focuses on improving mental health for university students and conducting applied research on mental health conditions. His notable projects include developing interventions to tackle problematic internet usage and enhancing care pathways for gambling disorders. Chamberlain completed his undergraduate studies at Christ's College, University of Cambridge, and earned his PhD in 2007. He has held positions at the University of Cambridge and has been an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist. Currently, he heads the Academic Psychiatry Department at the University of Southampton and leads the Mental Health Research Hub within the Applied Research Collaboration Wessex.
