Dr. Sam Nunn

Biography

Sam Nunn is the distinguished professor at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology and co-chairman and chief executive officer of the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a nonprofit organization focused on reducing the risks associated with nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons. He served as a United States Senator from Georgia for 24 years, from 1972 to 1996. Nunn's tenure in the Senate included time as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee and service on the Intelligence and Small Business Committees. He was instrumental in major legislative actions, such as the Department of Defense Reorganization Act and the implementation of the “Nunn-Lugar” Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, which aids former Soviet republics in securing and dismantling excess weapons. Nunn is also a respected figure in public policy and sits on the board of several major companies, including Coca-Cola Company and General Electric Company.
