Biography

Sam Otto joined the Cornell University Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering faculty as an Assistant Professor in July 2024. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University, awarded in 2022, and a B.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue University, completed in 2016. Prior to his appointment at Cornell, he worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of Washington’s AI Institute focusing on dynamic systems. His research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and engineering, particularly in developing scientifically grounded algorithms for modeling, forecasting, and controlling complex high-dimensional nonlinear systems and fluid flows. He works on leveraging data from experiments and high-fidelity simulations to create reliable data-driven models for engineering applications. His research also explores the limitations and capabilities of machine learning in the context of continuum mechanics, focusing on how physical information can enhance the efficiency of data-driven learning processes.
