Biography

Sam Rutherford is a historian specializing in gender and sexuality in predominantly nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain. His research examines the categories people used to understand and regulate gender and sexuality, tracing how these constructs have evolved over time. He explores the intellectual sources that informed these ideas and their interaction with state regulatory institutions. As a member of the Glasgow Lab for Intersex, Non-Binary Trans Studies (GLINTS), he is committed to enriching the discourse surrounding gender history. Rutherford teaches courses on modern British LGBTQ+ history at both Honours and postgraduate levels, and he convenes in-person and distance-learning MSc programs in Gender History. His forthcoming book, "Teaching Gender: The British University and the Rise of Heterosexuality, 1860–1939," published by Oxford University Press in 2025, delves into the construction of gender binaries during early-twentieth-century Britain and examines the impact of higher education reform on these dynamics. He welcomes inquiries from prospective PhD students interested in modern British gender, sexuality, and LGBTQ+ history.
