Biography

Sam Toueg is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University. He earned his PhD from Princeton University in 1979. His research focuses on distributed computing, concentrating on methodologies, paradigms, and algorithms for highly-available and secure distributed systems. His long-term goal is to bridge the gap between theoretical results and efficient practical solutions. Recently, he has collaborated with M. Aguilera and W. Chen on using unreliable failure detectors in designing reliable distributed systems. His work includes studies on failure detection, consensus in asynchronous systems, and the challenges associated with processes that crash and recover, as well as message loss. He has proposed new failure detectors particularly suitable for the crash-recovery model, and determined the conditions necessary for stable storage to solve the consensus model. Toueg has developed consensus algorithms that match these conditions, requiring stable storage and tolerating link failures—especially efficient under practical circumstances where failure detector mistakes may occur.
