Dr. Sam Wolfe

Biography

Sam Wolfe is a Professor of French Romance Linguistics at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford. His research primarily focuses on the grammatical variation and change in Romance languages, including French, Occitan, and Spanish. He has published extensively on the historical development of these languages, analyzing internal and external factors driving morphosyntactic differentiation from the medieval period to the present day. Among his notable works is the book 'Syntactic Change in French,' published by Oxford University Press in 2021, which charts the grammatical evolution from Latin to modern French. Wolfe is also involved in editing significant volumes such as the 'Oxford Handbook of Syntactic Cartography.' Alongside his research, he teaches a range of undergraduate and graduate courses covering topics in theoretical syntax, historical linguistics, and comparative Romance linguistics. Additionally, he has taken an active role in educational outreach as the Director of Schools Liaison at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, aiming to enhance access to higher education for underrepresented groups.
