Biography

Dr. Samantha Gateman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Western University. Her research focuses on the role of metals in modern society and the mechanisms of corrosion that can compromise structural integrity and safety. She studies the advancements in corrosion prediction tools, which aim to reduce economic and safety expenses. Dr. Gateman's work revolves around bridging connections between analytical chemists and corrosion scientists, employing novel quantitative methods that are spatially resolved to investigate corrosion initiation mechanisms on the micro and nano scale. She employs techniques such as scanning electrochemical probe microscopy (SEPM) to collect micro electrochemical images and extract local kinetic information of electrochemical reactivity from substrates. Dr. Gateman is committed to improving SEPM’s techniques to make them standardized electroanalytical tools for corrosion science. Alongside her research commitment, she is passionate about mentoring students in both experimental methods and macro electrochemical techniques. Dr. Gateman seeks enthusiastic individuals to join her collaborative and respectful team focused on corrosion science and SEPM.
