Biography

Samantha Pinto is a Professor in the Department of English at the University of Texas at Austin, with affiliations in African & African Diaspora Studies and Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies. She received her PhD from UCLA and has authored several influential books, including 'Difficult Diasporas: Transnational Feminist Aesthetic Black Atlantic,' which won the William Sanders Scarborough Prize from the Modern Language Association in 2013, and 'Infamous Bodies,' which explores the intersections of race, gender, and human rights through the lens of 18th and 19th-century black women celebrities. Pinto's research has been published in leading academic journals, and she has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and other institutions. She served as the Director of the UT Humanities Institute from 2022 to 2025, focusing on transforming research within the humanities. Her current projects examine topics such as travel, leisure, wellness cultures, and feminist ambivalence in contemporary universities. Pinto also aims to launch a student-based research lab dedicated to mobile reproductive health and access to higher education for underrepresented students.
