Sameer graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and obtained his PhD from Princeton University under the supervision of Professor Nathan Seiberg. He subsequently held research positions at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste and received a Marie Curie fellowship at the University of Paris. He later held a senior post-doctoral research position at Nikhef in Amsterdam, where he was awarded the NWO VIDI research grant by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research. Sameer moved to King's College London in September 2013 as a Lecturer in Theoretical Physics and is currently a Professor of Theoretical Mathematical Physics.
