Biography

Samer Hassan is a Spanish/Lebanese activist researcher currently working as a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. He is also an Associate Professor at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His research centers on decentralized collaboration, merging concepts from Computer Science and Social Sciences. Samer has been awarded the largest individual research grant in Europe, amounting to €1.5 million, for an ERC project focused on P2P Models. He leads a multidisciplinary team that aims to facilitate a commons-oriented Collaborative Economy by developing free and open-source prototypes based on decentralized technologies, such as federated systems and blockchain. With a strong focus on qualitative and quantitative methodologies, he conducts experiments with cooperatives and communities to explore novel forms of cooperative governance. Samer has been instrumental in creating frameworks for federated applications, like SwellRT, which is endorsed by the Apache Foundation. Alongside his academic pursuits, he actively participates as a grassroots organizer in various online and offline initiatives. He enjoys employing grassroots facilitation techniques in teaching his course on cyber-ethics.
