Dr. Samer Madanat

Biography

Samer Madanat is the Dean of Engineering at NYU Abu Dhabi and a Xenel Distinguished Professor in Engineering. He holds various prestigious roles, including Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California at Berkeley. With a significant focus on Transportation Infrastructure Management, Madanat's research emphasizes modeling facility performance, developing optimal management policies under uncertainty, and enhancing sustainability within transportation systems. He has authored over 80 articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including Transportation Science and the Journal of Transportation Engineering. His impact extends to academia as he has served as an invited speaker at more than 30 universities and research centers, providing keynote addresses at numerous scholarly conferences. Between 2001 and 2010, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Infrastructure Systems and currently serves as an Associate Editor for the European Journal of Transportation Logistics. Madanat has contributed to advisory committees for the National Research Council and has engaged in external reviews for Civil Engineering departments at institutions such as MIT and Tongji University. His dedication has also fostered the academic growth of his students, many of whom have become faculty members at universities around the world.
