Biography

Samikkannu Thangavel is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Texas A&M University's Irma Lerma Rangel School of Pharmacy. His research focuses on NeuroAIDS, particularly the interactions between drug abuse and HIV infection. Thangavel's lab aims to elucidate the role of HIV drugs in energy dysregulation, which can ultimately lead to neurodegeneration. He examines metabolic signatures, inflammasome profiles, mitochondrial biogenesis, and epigenetics using in vitro, ex vivo, and transgenic rat model systems. His goal is to develop novel diagnostic tests and treatments for neuroAIDS and neurological damage related to drug abuse. He also has a strong interest in teaching topics related to neuroscience, infectious disease, drug abuse, and addiction.
