Professor Samuel Breit is a Clinical Immunologist and Immunopathologist at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and a Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). He heads the Inflammation Cytokine Biology Research Program at the St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research. His career-long interest lies in biomedical research, with a long track record of project grant support and having published over 160 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Professor Breit’s group has been at the forefront of investigating two crucial molecules, the intracellular chloride ion channel protein CLIC1 and the divergent TGF-b superfamily cytokine MIC-1/GDF15, which have significantly advanced the understanding of their biology and potential clinical applications. These discoveries have been licensed to major international companies for patient diagnosis and therapy, notably in cancer and cardiovascular disease. His active research program involves collaboration with post-doctoral scientists and PhD students focused on the biological mechanisms and therapeutic applications of MIC-1/GDF15. Currently, his research investigates the central and peripheral mechanisms through which MIC-1/GDF15 influences anorexia, metabolism, and inflammation.
