Samuel Gentle is an Assistant Professor of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine. He received his MD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed his residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, NY. He also completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His primary research interests revolve around identifying mechanisms that contribute to bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm infants and developing protective strategies to reduce adverse pulmonary outcomes. Dr. Gentle's translational research has evaluated airway nitrite and oral nitrate reductase, mediators of nitric oxide bioavailability and BPD development. He seeks to identify infants likely to develop BPD and aims to develop novel therapeutics targeting the nitrate reductase activity pathway. Furthermore, he has explored biomedical signals and predictors associated with the development of BPD and pulmonary hypertension. His research aims to address major gaps in understanding oxygen saturation targets that are mechanistically related to pulmonary hypertension in preterm infants, focusing on reducing morbidity and mortality in this vulnerable population.
