Biography

Dr. Samuel Harvey leads the Workplace Mental Health Research Program at the School of Psychiatry, University of New South Wales. As a psychiatrist and epidemiologist, his research focuses on the interplay between physical and mental health, particularly in workplace settings. Dr. Harvey has significant experience in general adult consultation liaison psychiatry, having trained at the Maudsley Hospital Institute of Psychiatry in London. He completed his PhD at the University of London with a thesis titled "Does physical activity protect against common mental disorders?" and was awarded the UK Royal Society Medicine Young Epidemiologist of the Year award in 2009. His main research explores the relationship between work and mental health, investigating how workplace trauma can precipitate mental illness and the predictors of sickness absence. Currently, he is leading a five-year research program examining mental health issues faced by police, fire, and ambulance officers. Dr. Harvey is also involved in clinical work as a Consultation Liaison Psychiatrist at St George Hospital, Kogarah, and has run specialist services for patients with chronic renal disease and dedicated workplace psychiatry clinics.
