Biography

Samuel L. Volchenboum is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. He serves as the Associate Dean for Master's Education, and is the Associate Chief Research Informatics Officer for the Biological Sciences Division. Dr. Volchenboum specializes in pediatric hematology and oncology, focusing on caring for children with cancer and blood diseases. He directs the Pediatric Cancer Data Commons, a prominent research initiative aimed at liberating and democratizing data for cancer research. Under his leadership, this project has grown to become the world's largest publicly-available repository of data on children with cancer. His role extends to overseeing the Center for Research Informatics, which comprises a team dedicated to supporting biological research through high-performance computing, data storage solutions, and bioinformatics. Dr. Volchenboum has been a part of the University of Chicago faculty since 2007. He completed his MD and PhD in molecular biology at Mayo Medical School and pursued his residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital. His academic contributions also include a Master's degree in biomedical informatics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Volchenboum's research interests encompass enhancing monogenic diabetes care and advancing the integration of pharmacogenomics in cancer palliative care.
