Dr. San Duanmu

Biography

San Duanmu is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. He obtained his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1990. His research focuses on the general properties of language, with a particular emphasis on phonology and its interaction with morphosyntax. He has authored several notable publications including 'Phonology of Standard Chinese' (2nd edition, Oxford 2007), 'Syllable Structure: Limits of Variation' (Oxford 2008), and 'Foot Stress in Chinese' (Beijing Language and Culture University Press, 2016). In addition, he has contributed to the theory of phonological features, which was published by Oxford in 2016. Duanmu is also affiliated with the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, and his research interests include phonology, phonetics (feature theory, syllable theory, metrical theory, tones, poetic rhythm), and the interface between phonology and morphosyntax.
