Dr. Sandeep Silwal

Biography

Sandeep Silwal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is a member of the Theory group. He completed his PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) under the supervision of Piotr Indyk. His research interests broadly encompass efficient algorithm design, focusing on the intersection of machine learning and classical algorithms. Silwal is particularly interested in designing provable algorithms within machine learning settings, developing fast algorithms for processing large datasets, and addressing high-level questions related to search and retrieval machinery in relation to emerging challenges. He examines how to formulate 'good algorithms' with provable guarantees based directly on data, principles of sublinear algorithm design to alleviate bottlenecks in big data computing, and the role of algorithm design in the era of large language models.
