Biography

Sandra Albrecht is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. She is formally trained as a social epidemiologist and has received additional training in nutrition and chronic disease. Before joining Columbia, she worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Albrecht’s research is centered around socio-cultural and neighborhood-level factors that contribute to the high burden of nutrition-related chronic diseases in underserved populations. Her past research has involved longitudinal multi-level modeling approaches to investigate the social determinants of diet and cardiovascular disease risk, as well as the role of ethnic enclaves in shaping nutrition-related outcomes. Currently, she focuses on analyzing cohort, survey, and electronic health record data to understand the social and behavioral mechanisms that contribute to the high burden of type 2 diabetes, with a particular emphasis on improving access to quality healthcare and affordable, healthy food.
