Dr. Sandra Andersen

Biography

Sandra Breum Andersen is an Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen, specializing in evolutionary biology with a focus on the intersection of evolutionary and clinical microbiology. Her research aims to understand the effects of microbial social interactions on microbial species and their hosts, with the ultimate goal of predicting and manipulating microbial impacts on host fitness. She utilizes Social Evolution theory to frame her investigations into competition, cooperation, and cheating among microbes. Her academic background includes a BSc, MSc, and PhD in Biology, all obtained from the University of Copenhagen. She has conducted postdoctoral research at prestigious institutions including the University of Oxford and New York University. Sandra has received grants for her research, including the Sapere Aude grant from the Lundbeck Foundation, and is actively engaged in various collaborative projects across Europe and beyond. Hence, her expertise in microbial interactions is increasingly significant, especially as microbial health implications become more recognized in the context of modern diets and antibiotic use.
